Red Mountain Golf Club is consistently ranked among Phuket's top courses by visiting golfers and booking agents. Opened in 2007 and designed by Jonathan Morrow, the course was carved from a former tin mine in the Kathu district — the same industry that shaped much of Phuket's landscape. The result is a layout unlike anything else on the island: dramatic red laterite cliffs, exposed rock faces, and a terrain that drops and rises across 7,000-plus yards of challenging parkland. The contrast between the vivid ochre soil, tropical vegetation, and manicured fairways makes Red Mountain one of the most visually striking courses in Thailand. Owned and operated by MBK Public Co. Ltd., the club sits next door to Loch Palm Golf Club — also MBK-owned — making it straightforward to combine both courses in a single Phuket golf trip.

Layout & playing experience

The 18-hole, par-72 layout is built on sharply undulating terrain, with significant elevation changes throughout — the primary reason golf carts are compulsory here. The former tin mine topography creates natural amphitheatre settings on several holes, framing both tee shots and approach shots with steep reddish cliff faces. Water features prominently: a number of holes require accurate carries over ponds and streams fed by the mine's old excavation pits. The fairways are generous enough for mid-handicappers to enjoy, but small, fast greens and a variety of doglegs reward precise iron play and local knowledge. The layout plays to its natural contours throughout — there are no flat, forgettable stretches. A professional caddie is compulsory and adds genuine value here given the complex terrain; the undulating lies and elevated tee boxes make yardage and club selection less intuitive than on a flat course. Playing time is typically around five hours. The clubhouse and post-round facilities are well maintained, reflecting the course's premium market positioning.

Tips & what to know before you go

Book tee times in the morning — Red Mountain gets warm quickly and the exposed terrain offers less shade than jungle-lined courses. During high season (November–March), expect the course to be busy with European and Australian visitors; advance booking through the official MBK Golf website or a Phuket golf concierge is strongly advised. Caddies are skilled and accustomed to foreign visitors, so trust their yardage advice on holes where elevation change makes club selection non-obvious. Bring sunscreen and a cap — the open, elevated terrain offers significant sun exposure. The compulsory cart makes the round more comfortable given the hills, but pace of play is controlled, so arrive early. Low season (April–October) rates drop significantly and the course is noticeably quieter.

Location & getting there

Red Mountain Golf Club is located in Kathu, Phuket's central district, approximately 10 km east of Patong Beach and 12 km from Phuket Town. From Phuket International Airport, the drive is approximately 45 minutes via Route 402. The course is not accessible from Bangkok by road in any practical sense — all visitors fly (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang). From central Phuket hotels, Grab or a hotel-arranged transfer is the standard option. Kathu district is also home to Loch Palm Golf Club next door, making a multi-course itinerary easy to arrange.
