River Kwai Golf & Country Club

18 holes · Par 72Designed by Artanan YomchindaEst. 1993~2h from Bangkok

River Kwai Golf & Country Club occupies one of the most remote and atmospheric settings of any course within day-trip range of Bangkok. Opened in 1993 and designed by Artanan Yomchinda, the course sits deep in Saiyoke District along the banks of the Kwai River, roughly 130 kilometres from the capital. The layout stretches to 7,216 yards from the back tees across a par-72 configuration that makes full use of the jungle terrain surrounding it. Access is part of the experience: at kilometre-marker 40 on Route 323, golfers must board a small vehicle ferry to cross the Kwai River — with a maximum of two vehicles per crossing. The area sits close to several World War II historical sites, including the Death Railway route, giving the round a geographical weight that few courses can match.

Layout & playing experience

The course plays to 7,216 yards from the championship tees, making it a genuine test of length as well as shot-making. Carts are not permitted on the fairways, so play is conducted entirely on foot with a mandatory caddie — a format that suits the natural rhythm of a course where the surroundings reward attention. Artanan Yomchinda's routing works through dense tropical vegetation, with the Kwai River serving as both a boundary and a visual backdrop on several holes. The absence of cart paths cutting through the turf gives the layout a more natural, unhurried character than many resort courses in Thailand. A driving range is available for warm-up. Green fees are not published online and must be confirmed directly with the club by phone.

Tips & what to know before you go

Call ahead to confirm current green fees before making the trip, as pricing is not listed on the club's website. Plan to arrive with enough time to account for the ferry crossing — queues can form on weekends and public holidays, and the two-vehicle limit per crossing means waits are possible. Bring cash for the 300 THB caddie fee. The drive from Bangkok takes approximately two hours, so an early start is recommended to make full use of the day. The course is in a remote area with limited dining options outside the club, so eat before or plan to use the clubhouse facilities.

Location & getting there

The course is located at 191 Moo 2, Wang-Krajae, Saiyoke District, Kanchanaburi Province, approximately 130 kilometres from Bangkok — around two hours by road via Route 323. The defining access point is a vehicle ferry crossing at km-marker 40 on that route, where a maximum of two vehicles may cross at once. The setting in Saiyoke District places it near the Saiyoke National Park and within the broader WWII historical corridor that includes the River Kwai Bridge and sections of the Thailand-Burma Death Railway. There is no shuttle service from the town of Kanchanaburi; private car or self-drive is the standard approach.
