Sea Pines Golf Course — also known as Army Golf Club II — is one of Thailand's most unusual and dramatic golf experiences. Opened in 2010 and designed by Major General Weerayudth Phetbuasak of the Royal Thai Army, it sits within the Suan Son Pradiphat military recreation ground (Sea Pine Tree Garden) at Thanarat Camp, roughly 240 kilometres south of Bangkok near the Gulf of Thailand. The course plays to 7,305 yards over 18 holes at par 72, making it a genuine test of length as well as accuracy. What sets Sea Pines apart is its spectacular coastal setting: six holes run immediately alongside the beach on the Gulf of Thailand, delivering an open, links-style feel with sea breezes influencing every shot. The remaining holes occupy the mountain-facing side of the camp, separated from the beach holes by a railway line. As a military-managed course, the green fee is a flat 1,500 THB regardless of day of the week — exceptional value for a layout of this scale and scenery.

Layout & playing experience

Sea Pines divides naturally into two contrasting halves that test different aspects of your game. The beach-side holes — six in total — play as a genuine links experience, with firm turf, unpredictable sea winds off the Gulf of Thailand, and minimal tree cover demanding accurate trajectory control and thoughtful club selection. Bunkers are prominent throughout these holes, and the absence of trees means there is nowhere to hide from the wind. The mountain-side holes offer a different challenge: more enclosed fairways lined with mature pine trees, elevation changes, and a quieter, more parkland atmosphere. Crossing the narrow railway line between the two halves creates a memorable mid-round transition that golfers consistently mention. At 7,305 yards from the tips, the course rewards big hitters, but course management wins out over raw power on the windswept coastal holes. Greens are maintained to a reasonable standard and run at medium pace. As a military installation, the course has a no-frills but functional clubhouse, and the overall atmosphere is refreshingly unpolished compared with the resort courses further north in Hua Hin.

Tips & what to know before you go

Because Sea Pines sits inside an active military recreation area, army officers and their guests take tee-time priority. Civilian golfers are warmly welcome but should be prepared to yield — book through the pro shop or a reputable Hua Hin golf agent and confirm availability close to your tee time. The course is significantly more exposed to wind than inland courses in the region, so bring an extra club for beach-side holes and expect conditions to change quickly. The south-west monsoon (May to October) brings stronger onshore winds and occasional heavy rain in the afternoons; morning tee times are safer year-round. The caddie fee of 350 THB is mandatory and a tip of at least 400 THB is customary for a full 18 holes. Club rental is available on-site at 1,000 THB, making it straightforward to travel light. Bring sunscreen and a windproof top regardless of the forecast — the beach holes offer zero shelter.

Location & getting there

Sea Pines Golf Course is located approximately 240 kilometres south of Bangkok in the Suan Son Pradiphat area of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The drive from central Bangkok via Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) takes around three hours and 15 minutes. From Hua Hin town centre the course is around 20 kilometres south, a journey of roughly 25 minutes by taxi or Grab. The main entrance follows signs for Suan Son Pradiphat beach — a popular military recreation area open to the public. There is no direct public bus to the course gate; private transfer or taxi is the most practical option from Hua Hin.
