Thanont Golf View & Sports Club is a distinctive and underrated 18-hole course in northeast Bangkok's Khlong Sam Wa district, opened in 1995 and designed by American architect Bob McFarland. What sets Thanont apart from virtually every other Bangkok-area course is its extraordinary use of water: the entire layout is encircled by and threaded through water hazards, creating a course that is genuinely surrounded by lakes and channels. Five island greens — a strikingly high number — make accurate iron play an absolute requirement, not an optional skill. Despite this intimidating introduction, the course is fair and well-balanced, designed to accommodate golfers of all standards from the appropriate tee. Green fees are highly competitive, making it one of the most affordable courses within the metropolitan Bangkok boundary, and the all-in cost (green fee, caddie, cart) is well under 2,000 THB on weekdays.

Layout & playing experience
McFarland designed Thanont as an aquatic challenge first and a parkland course second. The course occupies a relatively flat plot but uses water so extensively that barely a hole passes without a significant carry or water-adjacent approach. The island greens demand straight, well-measured iron shots with no bail-out options; anything off-line finds water. The signature holes are the long par-4 ninth, where a vast lake guards the approach, and the par-5 eighteenth, which requires a final-hole carry to an island green in full view of the clubhouse. Between these bookends, the course offers a mix of shorter par-3s, strategic par-4 doglegs, and risk/reward par-5s. Fairways are well maintained with Bermuda grass. Despite the water-heavy layout, the course is open every day, groups of up to 6 are accommodated on weekdays, and pace of play is generally good. The design suits players who enjoy a consistent test of accuracy rather than power.
Tips & what to know before you go
Thanont is one of Bangkok's best-value courses for the quality of challenge it provides — weekday green fee 960 THB, caddie 260 THB, and cart 600 THB, totalling approximately 1,820 THB all-in. That is exceptional value for a Bob McFarland design. The island greens mean iron accuracy is paramount; bring extra balls. Maximum groups of 6 on weekdays, 5 on weekends. Open every day. Book at least 1 day in advance on weekdays, 2 days on weekends. Phone: +66 2 916 9100. The course is located in Khlong Sam Wa district on the northeast fringe of Bangkok — allow 55 minutes from the Sukhumvit corridor via Ramindra or Ram Inthra Road. Club hire available from 800 THB.
