Frequently Asked Question

Do You Need a Caddie at Thai Golf Courses?

Yes — at almost all golf courses in and around Bangkok, a caddie is mandatory. You cannot walk the course carrying your own bag. A caddie will be assigned to you before your round begins, regardless of your preference.

This surprises many visiting golfers who are used to optional caddies or pull-trolley rounds back home. In Thailand, the caddie system is a core part of the golf experience, not an add-on.

What "Mandatory Caddie" Means in Practice

When you check in at a Thai golf course, a caddie will be waiting for you at the first tee or allocated to you at the pro shop. There is no opt-out. The course assigns the caddie — you do not choose one, though regular visitors sometimes request a favourite over time.

A typical loop: 1. Caddie meets you at the bag drop or first tee 2. She carries your bag for the full 18 holes 3. She stays by your side throughout the round 4. After the round, she returns your bag to the bag drop

Most caddies at Bangkok-area courses are women. It is a significant source of employment, and the caddie system is a social institution as much as a logistical one.

The Caddie Fee vs. the Tip — They Are Not the Same

  • Caddie fee (mandatory): typically 400–600 THB, charged at check-in; goes to the course, not entirely to the caddie
  • Caddie tip: paid directly to the caddie in cash at the 18th green — the standard is 400–500 THB per round; this is the caddie's primary income and is considered obligatory, not optional

Always have THB cash ready for the tip.

What Caddies Actually Do

A good Thai caddie is significantly more than a bag-carrier: 1. Carries your bag for all 18 holes in Bangkok's heat and humidity 2. Reads greens — points out slope, grain, and break before you putt 3. Advises on yardages and carry distances to the pin or to hazards 4. Rakes bunkers after your shot 5. Cleans clubs between shots 6. Manages course logistics — cart paths, local rules, where to stand 7. Offers course management advice — which side of the fairway to favour, where the trouble is

How to Work Well With Your Caddie

1. Say hello and introduce yourself — she will be with you for four or five hours 2. Ask her name early and use it 3. Tell her your game — how far you carry a 7-iron, your typical miss 4. Listen to her reads on greens — she likely plays this course several times a week 5. Keep your pace — caddies appreciate golfers who are ready when it's their turn 6. Tip in cash at the end — do not pay through the clubhouse or add to a card

Exceptions — Courses That Allow Self-Carry

A small number of courses — typically more casual layouts or resort-style facilities outside Bangkok — do permit self-carry or offer pull trolleys. These are the exception. If self-carry is important to you, call the course directly before booking to confirm their policy.
